Doofy

Thanks so much Natalie. Doofy really brought a smile to my face when I saw him. He certainly is dozy and goofy but pretty cute for a monster too.

Inbox Treasure

Look what Mina sent us! A monster and three delicious meals she's been learning how to cook in Lockdown. For so many people this these last few months have been a time for learning new skills. These meals look absolutely delicious Mina. If I were served these dishes in a restaurant, I would be delighted and send my compliments to the chef immediately!

Monster Time

By very popular request, here's a Draw With Rob today. This is my monster.
She's called Iris and, if I had colouring pencils, I would colour her in purple and yellow.
Here's Rob's video
We can't wait to see you monsters so draw them, name them and send them to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com

Balancing Scales

You don't see old fashioned weighing scales like this very often, but to balance them means to have exactly the same mass on each side.
These scales are balanced because they are level which means that the contents of the bowls might not look the same but they weigh the same.
So here's today's maths problem
In each picture the scales on each side a balances so the weight of two cubes is equivalent to 16kg.
Check back for the answers tomorrow.
Friday Update
The sphere weighs 7kg

Have you got a problem commenting?

Lots of people have been telling me they find it hard to comment on the blogs. Remember you can always email us debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com and I can put your comment up under your name.
Below is a post Miss Mackenzie posted a while ago about how to allow comments in you are using an Apple device - this might be the solution for some people

Posting Comments
Hi all, A number of children and families have been struggling to post comments on their tablets, iPads and iPhones etc., particularly those made by Apple. Miss Mackenzie has shown tenacity and persevered and has found the solution.
How to comment on blogs1. Open the settings on your tablet/iPhone/iPad. 2. Select Safari from the list of apps. 3. Scroll through the Safari settings and turn off the setting that says Prevent Cross-Site Tracking. This will allow the blog to check if you are a robot and then send your comments, ideas, thoughts and answers to us and we will be able to publish them on the blog.

Keep sending us your answers, we love hearing from you. Also keep sending photos of work and photos of you at home doing your home learning to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com. Thank you

What are you reading?

One thing that lockdown has definitely given me more time for is reading. These are the books I have read since school closed. It's a lot more than I would normally get round to reading and my neighbours have lent me some books I wouldn't have normally chosen but enjoyed.
These books have taken my imagination to London, South Carolina, Hong Kong, Dorset, New Jersey, Somerset, Wales, Germany, Bristol, Hungary, Tangiers, Shetland, New York and the one I'm reading at the moment is set in Australia. My mind has done a lot of travelling but I've not been anywhere!
Tell us what you've been reading in the comments.
Remember you can get e-books out of Hackney Libraries here
There are also free books to read here
You can listen to free audiobooks here
and here.

Brush your teeth

I'm sitting here updating the blog and Kenny Cat keeps peering in at me through the window. You might notice that his mouth has curled up at the side. This often happens because Kenny only has four teeth! He had to have most of them out a few years ago because of gum disease. It doesn't seem to bother him at all but sometimes his mouth looks very funny.

Masks

Do you remember this day? It was 26th February and we got the train from Dalston Junction to the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill to do a workshop on masks. I remember you all running down that steep hill behind the museum with the fantastic views north over London.
We went because we were going to make Maya masks in DT but school shut down before we could.
Have a look at this link here.
So, the idea is you read the book by getting it out of the Hackney e-library here. You need a library account  but you can open a new one if you don't know the number. by clicking here. Then you follow the video to make the mask. Of course, you don't need to read the book at all - you can just make the mask. And you don't need to make a lion mask - you can make any sort of mask you like!!!
Whatever  you do, send us a picture to debeauvoirprimary@gmail.com

Time for a bar model.

Here's today's maths challenge, read it carefully:

To find out what the number is before you halve it to find the answer, this bar model might help you.

Remember the shaded bit is worth 12 and we want to know what half of the bar is worth.
Answers, as ever, tomorrow, until then post your answer in the comments or send it to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com
Thursday Update
I used a bar model to help me with this one. The answer is 15.

Where's Kumar?

Unlike Biff and Kenny, Kumar must hunt for his food, in very dangerous terrain. In order to hunt, Kumar must be very well camouflaged, can you spot him on the mountain side? Comment below when you've spotted him.

An apple a day keeps the artist at play

Thanks so much for your still life Natalie. I love your use of shadow to make the apple 3D. You really used your eyes and drew what you saw. Well done!

Kindertransport

Do you remember we watched this video in class? The man in the video is Nicolas Winton and today would have been his 111th birthday if he were alive. It's such a moving piece of film isn't it?
He was responsible for the Kindertranpsort and you can read more about that here. I met a woman who was rescued by Nicholas Winton, she came to speak to my Year 6 class many years ago.  She had a very interesting life story to tell. She never saw her family again after leaving Germany but she lived a long life and interesting life in England.

Still Life

Today my day has been brightened by Mina's beautiful still life drawing.  We all agree it's spectacular!  Thank you so much for sending it.

Morse Code

Listen to this piece of music? It was a theme tune to a TV programme over 30 years ago. What adjectives can you think of to describe the music? Do you like it? What instruments can you hear>
The programme was called Morse and it was about a police detective, called Inspector Morse, who solved crimes in Oxford.  I always thought this piece of music was really clever because, if you listen you can hear M-O-R-S-E- being sounded out in Morse Code. Watch this video to find out what Morse Code is.

Here's  the code:
So M O R S E is               -- --- ... .-. -..
If you listen to the music again you can hear it being pulsed out. Later on, the string instruments play the rhythm of  -- --- ... .-. -..  again as an ostinato (a repeated pattern). Can you hear it?
I just really like the music, it's very mysterious and intriguing but I think the Morse Code in it is clever too,
Post your name in Morse Code in the comments.

Zids and Zods

Happy Tuesday!!! Here's today's Maths Challenge. Have a go and post your answer in comments or email us at debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com
Wednesday Update
Here are the answers to yesterday's challenge.

Long Lost Cousin.

This is Biff and and Kenny's Nepalese cousin Kumar. He lives very high up in the cold and snowy mountain range of the Himalayas. Who can remember what mountain we studied which is part of the Himalayas? Unlike Biff and Kenny, he is very shy and stays away from humans.

Pocahontas

This week's Homeschool History is  here.  This week it is about Pocahontas who was a real person and not just a Disney film. Listen to is and give us three facts you learned about her in the comments.

Still Life

Von Riswick
This link here takes you to a Year 7 lesson (but you're ready for that). It's a lesson on still life . Still life is a collection of objects (usually fruit and household objects) painted to show off an artists's skill.
Cezanne
Watch the videos in the lesson here, and then choose some objects in your house to draw.  Send us the results.

The Book of Hopes

Children's authors and illustrators have come together, online of course, to put together a book of hopes.  the stories and drawings are supposed to bring children like you and your friends, a little bit of 'happy' during lockdown.
It's called 'The Book of Hopes' and you can give it a read whenever you like, as it's online here and completely free.
Read one of the stories, let us know which one you read and how it made you feel.

Summer Maths

It's going to be hot, hot, hot this week. A bit cooler and cloudier on Friday but still warm.
So you'll be needing plenty of cool, refreshing drinks to keep you going.
Here's a maths challenge and you might want to think of 5 litres as being 5000 ml in order to solve it. That's the only clue we'll give you. Check back for the answer tomorrow.
Tuesday Update
A glass contains more than a mug.

Tamaya's Unicorn

Another unicorn! Thank you so much for this wonderfully colourful picture Tamaya. It an amazing piece of art; we love it! Remember, if you've got something to send us, take a picture and send it to
debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com

Ivy

Thanks so much for sending us this Mina.  Here's her unicorn, it's amazing and she's called Ivy - she looks so peaceful and content. Ivy's not got a worry in the world.

Nigel's defences are down

Simon, my next door neighbour on the other side to Major Tom, has now just sent me this photo of Biff and Kenny in his kitchen looking for Nigel's food.  These cats are out of control.

Darren the Unicorn

Whaddya make of my unicorn? Cute, huh? His name is Darren.
I drew him with help from Rob

He mentions in the video that artists agree that drawing horses is one of the most difficult things to draw.  I was reminded of the English artist George Stubbs who lived from 1724-1806 and was famous for his magnificent paintings of horses.
This is perhaps his most famous painting:
It's called Whistlejacket and was bought for the nation for 11 million pounds in 1997. You can go and see it at The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square when the lockdown is over. It's pretty good isn't it. Better than Darren? Maybe not...

Hurray

Hoorah, SATs week would be over today if we were at school but let's do another question just to keep our brains working. We'll post the answers on Monday. In the meantime, you can post your answers in the comments or send them to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com

Telephone Kiosks

You still see them on the street but mobile phones mean that nobody really uses telephone boxes anymore. Lots of people are sad to see the old red telephone boxes go though and work hard to keep them open as mini libraries and take-away coffee shops.  Read this and tell us two facts you learned about phone boxes.
