My eyes are playing tricks on me again...

Look at what Izzy juts sent us - it's messing with my eyes and brain.

I'm trying to work out why Izzy's looks better than mine. I think it's because she has drawn more levels (so the hole looks deeper) and clearly has a black felt tip at home (which I do not!!!).

Polly's club just got bigger.

Another amazing alien landed in the school inbox, this time, from Izzy. I love how all your drawings have different and imaginative lower halves. Thanks for sending this Izzy, it made us all smile. If you want to send us anything debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail is the address to send it to. We are always, always thrilled to see your name in the inbox.  We miss you. Keep 'em coming.

Draw an optical illusion

Watch this video...it's pretty cool.
I had a go myself but I don't have a black felt tip at home so I just had to colour it in with a black biro (my arm hurts now!). If you don't have any black pens at all, I think you will just have to colour all the black bits hard in pencil with no white. Let us see how you get on  by sending a picture to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com

Here's my effort:

#ThrowbackThursday

 Hey Year 6,
Do you remember when we went to the RAF museum? That was a good day. Can you guess what the actual date was? Closest guess to the actual date wins. Obviously, if you keep a diary you are at an advantage because you can just look up the date. Post your answer in the comments. I need the day and month e.g. I think we went on 30th April.

Friday Update
Well done Izzy - you are absolutely correct. I was certain we went before half term but you were right. I had to go back through my emails looking for the booking. Here's the proof it was 19th November.

Detective Dan

Morning Year 6. How are we all?
Read today's two-part  maths challenge carefully...
Post your answer in the comments and I will post my answer tomorrow.
Friday Update
Dan found 48 and 63.

Another Pal for Polly

We are a very talented bunch of cartoonists in Year 6 - look what Asmin sent us!!!!
Thanks so much Asmin - your cartoon is amazing. We are always so delighted to hear from you and see what you are up to at home.  If you want to send us anything email us here debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com and make our day!

Kenny's a lion (he thinks)

I turned my laptop on and put it on the bed. Everyday, when you turn it on, it shows you an amazing picture.  Today it was a lion...Kenny cat was taking great interest in his powerful and majestic cousin although I suspect he thought he was looking in a mirror!

This is cool...

If you click on the Google logo today or here it takes you to this
where you can compose your own visual music compositions.  It's good fun and, the funny thing is, whatever you do - it sounds really good.  Have a go and let us know how you got on.

A Pal for Polly

Another absolutely incredible cartoon from Hamza!!! Today's a good day - I like what you've done with the one big foot! Send us you pictures. You can use the old email address but debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com might be better because I can check it myself. Keep them coming.

Knock Knock

Knock Knock
What makes a good 'Knock Knock' joke?
Give me a good 'Knock Knock' joke in the comments and try these ones out on people at home. Which one makes them laugh the most? The last one's my favourite.

Junk

Leo's been spending his money on a lot of old rotten junk food. Luckily, he's got some money left for fruit and vegetables!
Post your answer in the comments and I'll give you the answer tomorrow.

Thursday UpdateWell done everyone! The pizza cost £6.30

1907

Ok, here's another picture of our school. This time from 1907. The school was used for adults in the evenings and these women are learning millinery (hat-making). The question is...where are they in the school?
What has stayed the same and what's different?

Tuesday 28 April 2020

Where's this?

This is a picture I found of our playground in 1971 - these children in the picture are in their 50s now.  Can you look closely enough to see where exactly this picture was taken? What's new and not in this picture? Let us know in the comments.

BBC Home Learning

These are the three lessons for Year 6 on the BBC Home Learning website. We have covered all this in class but it might be useful to have a look. You will definitely learn new stuff in the Geography lesson. Have a look here. P7 (Primary 7) is what they call Year 6 in Scotland because they call Reception P1.
If some of it's too easy for you, then there's no harm in having a look at the Year 7 stuff - or even the Year 8 content.  Aren't you a clever bunch?
Let us know if you enjoy any particular lessons and what you learned.

How many?

So, this is a different sort of maths challenge today and I don't actually have the exact answer but I have made a good estimate (educated guess). Post your answer and I'll tell you my estimate tomorrow.
Wembley Stadium - the largest stadium in England - has a capacity of 90,000 people so your answer is going to be quite a bit less than that. Below is a picture of Wembley where there are 90,000 seats.

Eye eye - it's an alien.

Inspired by Hamza's incredible dinosaur, I thought I would have a go a another of Rob Biddulph's cartoons. In  his alien video (below) he says that you can do the bottom half of the alien any way you like. He did his with tentacles and I gave mine nobbly knees and wellington boots. I wish I had some colours in my house to colour mine in but, unfortunately, I don't. Nevermind.
Here's the video to watch.
And here's mine.
Can anyone think of a good name for her? Post in the comments and send us your attempt to admin@debeauvoir.hackney.sch.uk (Forward to Year 6 in the subject).

Lazy, lazy cats

It looks like that beautiful sunny weather has gone for a bit. The weather forecast says it is going to rain until the weekend now. The plants need a good soaking after all that settled sunshine I suppose.

It was very cold in my home earlier this morning so I turned the heating on for an hour to take the chill off.
Biff and Kenny were straight under the radiator to warm their fur. So lazy...

Wow!!!!!!

Oh my word!!! Look at this pure brilliance from Hamza. What an amazing cartoonist! It looks so good when you add colour and go round the outside in black pen doesn't it? Getting one of your pictures always makes our day. I am inspired to have a go at another cartoon and see what you come up with too.
Hamza took a photo of his picture and emailed it to admin@debeauvoir.hackney.sch.uk and typed 'Forward to Year 6' in the subject which is how we got it. You can do the same.

Short and Simple

I rang every home in Year 6 today and it was really good to hear from you and your grown ups although some of you were still fast asleep in bed when I rang!!! Nothing wrong with a good lie in every now and then but let's get those brains working with a short and simple maths problem! Answers tomorrow.
Tuesday Update
The answer is 96
25% is equivalent to a 1/4 so I worked out the answer by multiplying 24 by 4 because I wanted to know 4/4 (Teddy's whole number).

The Space Race

Here is the next Homeschool History episode and, this week, it's on The Space Race which I think you know a lot about from Year 5. I found it really interesting but I didn't have a pen and paper handy for the quiz at the end so don't make my mistake!
Tell us something you learned in the comments.

Friday 24 April 2020

Now that's what I call...amazing!!!

Thanks so much to Natalie who had a go at drawing a dragon on St. George's Day. It's brilliant and it absolutely made my day to receive it. If you want to send us any work just send it to admin@debeauvoir.hackney.sch.uk and put 'Forward to Year 6' in the title.

I can't tell you how happy it makes us to hear from you.

Here it is:

To be a cat

Here is a Year 6 writing lesson based on the Matt Haig novel, 'To be a Cat'. There are some interesting writing activities and some work on using dialogue to move action on (which we did loads of!). You might just want to listen to Maro Itoje (England rugby star) reading the story and read bit for yourself.  Keep reading, keep writing, keep using your brain.

Here's one for all you Nigel fans out there.

He's actually a very pretty cat and very sweet.I hope Biff and Kenny don't check this blog - they wouldn't be very happy to see Nigel being complimented like that or Nigel posing for pictures on their lawn. He's fifteen years old (apparently) and they should respect their elders.

Flash Harry

Morning Year 6. It's Friday (believe it or not). This morning I was on the phone talking to a head of Year 7 at a secondary school some of you are transferring to (I won't say which) and it was so lovely to talk about you and all the wonderful things we know about you. I could hear that the Head of Year 7 was so looking forward to meeting you
Here's the challenge of the day. Read it carefully -Flash Harry can't make up his mind.
Did Flash Harry win or lose? Let us know in the comments - answers on Monday.
Monday Update
I make it that Flash Harry made 200 pounds after all his buying and selling.

Thursday 23 April 2020

George Killed the Dragon (apparently).

Today is 23rd April and it is St George's Day. St. George is the patron saint of England. We don't know very much about George but there are lots of myths. It's very unlikely that St. George ever came to England or killed the dragon he is famous for slaying. It's believed he was born in a place that is modern day Turkey. If you want to find out more about St George, click here.
I thought I would mark St George's day by drawing a dragon. I used this video but there are lots to choose from.
Here's my dragon - have a go and send us your dragon,

WordWheel

We love a word wheel. Give yourself three minutes. Click here for a timer.
I'll tell you the nine letter word tomorrow and show you the words I got. Let us know how you get on in the comments.
On your marks, get set, go!!!!
Friday Update
The nine letter word is 'volcanoes'.

Ramadan

Today is the start of the holiest month in the Islamic Calendar, the month of Ramadan. We know there are lots of families at De Beauvoir who will be preparing for this very special month of prayer and fasting. If you want to know more about what Ramadan is, click here

Gurmit's Presents

Morning Year 6! How are we all?
I know a lot of you enjoy keeping your brains working by puzzling out these challenges so here's one for today.
As ever, answers tomorrow on Friday.

Friday Update
Present A- 2 pounds
Present B -4 pounds
Present C - 6 pounds
Present D- 1 pounds
Present E - 8 pounds

Wednesday 22 April 2020

A Mexican Stand-Off

A Mexican stand off is a situation of conflict between two people where no option exists for either of them to win.
Here's a good example of a Mexican stand-off between Kenny and Nigel. Neither is moving, neither can win. They just have to wait it out and stare at each other.... It's been going on all morning. You've got to look carefully for Nigel but he's there alright.

Sum of the digits

To give an answer to today's challenge you need to know what 'sum of the digits means'.
I'll give explain by giving you an example:

the sum of the digits in 34 is 7 because 3+4 =7;
the sum of the digits in 1362 is 12 because 1+3+6+2 =12.

Got it? Good.
Now you can have a go at the challenge!
Post you answers in the comments. Answers tomorrow.

Thursday Update
Correct me if I am wrong (which I may well be) but I think there are four possible answers:
4983;
4389;
4587;
4785.
  • They are all between 4,000 and 5,000
  • All the digits are different
  • The thousands digit has to be 4 which makes the tens digit 8
  • The sum of all the digits is 24
  • All the numbers are odd.

World Earth Day

Today is World Earth Day, in fact it's the 50th World Earth Day. The 22nd April is a day when we think about our planet and what we can do to keep it healthy. To think about saving water and energy; reducing pollution, recycling and protecting animals.
It's an interesting World Earth Day because the lockdown is having some positive benefits for Earth. Air pollution across the world is falling as people stay at home and stop flying in planes and driving in cars. When food is not so plentiful in the supermarkets; people waste less of it. Will we go back to 'normal' when this is over? What will change in how we look after the planet? What do you think?
Try the Earth Day Newsround Quiz.
Post your score in the comments. I got 5/7  -it's tough!!!!!!!

Snack Time for Biff

Biff has been badgering me for a snack for most of the day. He miaows and winds himself around my legs. Then he sits and looks up at you with his big green hungry eyes hoping you will reach for the Treat Tin.
He loves me being at home because I am a soft touch and give in to his constant demands for snacks too often. Here he is, taking a break from NigelWatch to nearly snap my hand off for a treat. No sign of Nige today - his owner Simon told me, over the garden fence, that Nigel is lying on his sofa watching his children do Joe Wicks' PE workout.

Drawings from Lockdown

I just read this and found it interesting. Sometimes, I forget that millions and millions of children and teachers around the world are staying home and that it's not just us. Children from around the world have been drawing their 'lockdowns'. Read their experiences here. Could you draw yours and send it to us at admin@debeauvoir.hackney.sch.uk ?

Learn something new

I'm trying to use this extra time we have at home to learn something new every day. Today I am going to learn the alphabet in British Sign Language. Here's a video.
And here's a diagram
The vowels (a,e,i,o,u) are easy. Can you see why? P is easy because it looks like a P. Same with V, D, M, J and N.I'm going to learn it and then get someone to test me. Then I 'll try again tomorrow to see if I remember. Let us know how you get on.
The brain is a muscle!!!! Keep using it.

Blue-Footed Booby

This at these two with their incredible feet!!!
They are blue-footed boobies and are my 'Amazing Animal of the Day'.
Here are some facts I learned about the blue footed booby.
Fact 1 - They can be found on the Galapagos Islands (which we looked up when we were learning about Darwin and where he studied the Galapagos finches and decided on his theory of Natural Selection)
We did this experiment....

Fact 2 - The more blue a blue-footed booby's feet, the healthier the blue-footed booby is.
Fact 3 - Blue-footed boobies are expert hunters and their diet is fish they dive into the sea to catch.
Fact 4 - In the wild, they live up to 17 years old.

Have a look here and see if you can find us any more blue-footed booby facts. Post them in the comments.

That's right, it's Nigel!!!!!!! 'Nigel- the sworn enemy of Biff and Kenny.
In Biff and Kenny's garden as bold as brass sitting there like he rules the place. Fur is going to fly, mark my words.

Homeschool History.

I was just listening to this on the radio which was playing in the background whilst I was working and it was very interesting. If you like Horrible Histories, you'll enjoy this too. Listen to the podcast and the have a go at the quiz at the end. Make sure you have a pen and scrap of paper handy so you can write down your quiz answers.
