Eyes hurting? Why not listen to a story with your ears instead of reading one with your eyes?

Lie back, shut your eyes and listen to one of the wonderful stories.

We think you'll like the stories in the sections circled below.
Post in the comments the ones you recommend.

Dinosaur Drawing

Hey Year 6,
What do you think of my dinosaur drawing??? Without wishing to blow my own trumpet, I think it's pretty good. The only problem is, I don't have any colours at home to colour him in!
Why don't you have a go yourself, and follow this video - that's what I did.

Let us see how you get on.

Tuesday Maths Challege

Morning Year 6,
How's it going? We've got a maths problem with three steps today. It's a pretty straightforward problem but easy to make mistakes if you're not careful. Answer tomorrow - in the meantime, post yours in the comments below.
Wednesday Update

Monday 30 March 2020

Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda but Did Ya?

In Year 6 we learned that modal verbs indicate likelihood: possibility or certainty.
Watch this to refresh your memory.

Have a go at this challenge.

Can you use modal verbs in a sentence to tell us something you may or may not be doing at home today?

Kenny says, "I might go for a walk later and I will have a nap soon."

Leave your answer in the comments.

Perimeter Puzzle

Ok, time to get the brains working.  We did a lot of work on perimeter and finding unknown lengths. We found it easier to sketch this problem out onto a piece of paper so we could mark in the missing lengths. Have a go and post your answer in the comments. We'll give bonus marks if you can work out the area of this shape too. Check back for the answer tomorrow.
Here's a video if you need a reminder about perimeter.

Tuesday Update
Answers below
Perimeter = 45 cm
Area = 63 cm2

Paradise

Hey Year 6,
We've written a description of a scene trying to include expanded noun phrases, figurative language and prepositional openers. Read it and then check back on Monday to see if the picture we were describing was similar to the one you had in your head. Could you write a description of somewhere you'd like to be right now?

In the foreground, pale soft yellow sand stretches off far into the distance. Not a soul can be seen. To the right of the beach, starts the lush thick jungle. The hissing, clicking and gibbering of the unseen forest residents provides a soulful music to accompany the paradise. You are not alone. From the jungle sprouts one tall palm tree; its fronds striking out for freedom towards the dazzlingly bright sun. The slender trunk of the palm tree snaking free and arching over the beach. Lapping gently at the sands are the cool blue azure waters of the ocean. Gentle waves break in white foamy ridges on the sands and the cool waters beckon you to cool off in its watery embrace.

Monday Update
Here's the picture we were describing. Was it like the picture in your head?

Hola Chicos

This is Kenny's brother Biff. Biff's been out and about this morning checking out his territory, getting a bit of exercise and keeping 2 metres from all other cats (including Nigel). Now he's watching from the upstairs window to make sure the garden is safe from his two main enemies - Major Tom and Nigel. Happily, they are nowhere to be seen this morning.
Biff knows it's important to keep active which is why he recommends you have a go at this video. We did it in class once and you all found it hilarious! It helps with your Spanish too!

Puzzle of the day

You'll need to remember our work on equivalent fractions to solve this puzzle. Post your answer below and we'll give you the answer on Monday.

Monday Update

9 was the answer. Look below at how we worked it out.

Kenny Cat wants you to logon.

This is Ms Elliott's cat Kenny this morning. He is 11 years old so really he should be in Year 6 but he found school got in the way of all his napping so he never went. He has a brother Biff (also 11) who is off on one of his adventures this morning. In this picture Kenny is watching Nigel (the cat from next door) who is drinking out of the garden  pond. Kenny doesn't particularly like Nigel drinking out of his pond but he has decided to tolerate it for now.
Kenny wants to remind all of Year 6 to logon to TimeTable Rockstars where Mr White-Sage and Ms Elliott have set times tables for you. They will also be checking Reading Plus usage so they can award certificates.

How about writing a limerick?

This morning we had a go at writing a limerick.

There was once a school in Tottenham Road
That for a short while remained closed.
The children learned alone
In their very own home
Which usually only happened when it snowed.

Limericks are silly poems with five lines. They were made famous by Edward Lear who wrote the "Book of Nonsense" in the 1800s. This was a whole book of silly limericks.
Watch this film on how to write a Limerick.   How to write a limerick

Or how about this one? Countries and other places are a good idea for the end of the first line.
This site will help you find rhyming words.
Post your limerick below, we'd love to read them.

Coins Conundrum

Maths Problem of the Day
Earlier in the year we learned how to describe a circle. Do you remember what the circumference, diameter and radius are? If not, click here  ------> Quiff and Boot do circles.
Can you try this problem and post your answer? We'll post the answer tomorrow.

Grammarsaurus

Grammarsaurus is a website that provides resources for teaching Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation to help children develop their writing skills. They have created a free home-learning pack focused on writing for children in Years 5 and 6. Click the link below to download a PDF with some ideas for idea generation, grammar practice and writing templates. If you don't have a printer at home, you can copy these into the books that you received from school.

How did you get on? Send pictures of your writing to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com.

Odd Squares

Here's something for you to try Year 6.

How are you all getting on?  We hope you're keeping busy and keeping your brains working. Have a go at this and let us know your answers.

Watch here if you don't remember what a square number is.

I tried to draw out what I had done here. Does this help you with your observations? Let us know.

Natwest MoneySense activities

Natwest bank have created a range of activities for children to help them better understand money. In a world where we often rely on contactless payments, online payments and use credit/debit cards instead of cash, children are being exposed to money less. It is important for children to learn about the value of money, what things cost and also to understand how they will use money in the future for security.

Other games and activities related to money

Stamps and Letters

Ms Elliott has been rewarding Year 6 with international postage stamps instead of stickers. They have had stamps from all over their world in their books. Can you remember some of the countries that you have received a stamp from? If you could design a stamp, what would it look like?

Did you know....
The UK is the only country that does not display its name on its postage stamps.

Did you know....
In 1973, Bhutan issued a stamp that could play their national anthem if put on a record player.
Did you know....
The first non-royal to appear on UK postage stamps was William Shakespeare in 1964.
Did you know....
In 2013, Belgium issued stamps that smelt and tasted of chocolate.
In the 21st Century, people rely on technology to communicate with their friends and families - social media, texts, group chat, emails and video calls - and don't send as many letters or cards in the post. Given the current situation, we are relying on technology more than ever.
Have a look at the school website to see the Online Safety rules.

If you could send a letter to anyone in the world, who would you write to and why? What would you say?
Post your ideas and comments in the box below. You could even write a letter to Ms Elliott or Mr Whitesage.
